How to Open a Spa

Going into Business for Yourself

Opening and managing a spa can be a rewarding and exciting career.

Owning and operating your own business is a great undertaking and opening your spa is no different. With careful planning and lots of preparation, you can turn a great idea into a profitable and fun business.

What Kind of Spa?

Decide what kind of spa you would like to open. Will it be a medical spa or simply one which offers facials, massages and pedicures? Will you be providing any services which need a wet room? Will you offer the use of a jacuzzi or a steam room?

Once you have decided which type of spa to open, talk with others in the spa business to get a good idea of what you can expect. Networking with others is an important part of your business ideal. Ask someone who is in the business to help you develop a business plan, including start up costs, equipment costs, a computer and all in one printer, deposits for your building and rental space and your projected income.

Getting a Loan

Most banks have plans in place which will allow customers to apply for small business loans. Contact your local bank first. If you have a long standing relationship with the bank, they will be more likely to give you the loan. You will need to present your business plan to the loan officer and discuss the details of your business.

Check with government websites about tax deductions and government programs that help small businesses. These programs can be extremely helpful in getting you the money that your start up will require.

What is Good Location?

Finding the right location for your business is one of the most important aspects of ownership. You will want to choose an area that is high traffic, but is also easily accessible. Look for a building with proper plumbing and an appropriate amount of space. Since different states have different laws about restroom areas and handicap accessibility, check with the state massage board and the barber board to find out about any laws pertaining to your building.

Get a License

After you choose your location, go to your local city hall to obtain a business permit. They will be able to tell you exactly which kind of licenses you will need. It's also a good idea to join your city's Better Business Bureau. You can make excellent contacts for your business through them.

Purchasing Your Equipment

Purchasing spa equipment can largely be done online. Check around with different websites to find the best deals. At this point, you will also want to decide on a decorating scheme for your business. If you do not want to do this yourself, you can always hire a decorator.

Advertise

Once you have decided on an opening date, begin to advertise your business. Newspaper, radio and internet ads are all very effective. You should also begin advertising for your employees. Check the local trade schools and let them know you are interested in hiring graduates. Once you have hired your employees, have a staff meeting and discuss company policy and business procedures.

Once you have completed all these steps, your spa should be ready to open to the public.
